Yes I have had this unfortunate experience as well. (On 2.4.x)  I have 
found though that if you reauthenticate when this happens, the page 
update should then succeed. However, if you start using your browser's 
back and forward buttons instead of authenticating, you can indeed lose 
your edits!

I'm not sure if having sessions never timing out presents any kind of 
security risk or not; the only one I can see is that it could provide 
more opportunity for a hacker (over a period of time) to discover and 
forge the session ID cookie.
