Others have answered why this happens, so I'll not repeat.

I've been fortunate when this has occurred to be able to recover the edit
by using the browser's Back button, which usually takes me back to the
edit session in progress, where I then copy the text out to a text file,
logged in and resumed saving the page. I use FireFox but I would guess
this should work with any browser.

The other thing I've learned is that whenever I write anything online that
is relatively long or I consider valuable, I now write it in a local editor
and then cut and paste into the online page. Most of the time my local
editor has more features than the online editors (which are usually just
form fields), so there's that advantage too.
