Parsing Messages and Pipe Advert Discovery

I seem to be having problems when parsing Messages. Can anyone point me
at somewhere that explains the various nuances in handling messages.  I
seem to have come across a minefield of deprecated methods when using
examples from JXTA in a Nutshell.
 
Also can someone point me to somewhere that explains how to discover
pipe adverts?
