in meerkat a mcast (therefore prop pipe) listener can opt to reply directly
the mcast initiator to
exchange presence state ... thereby avoiding the cascading mcast storm if
one were to reply to all.

this is manifested in the presence proto which changes presence state via a
ui mouse over event.
