Ultimately it comes down to definitions. If you are using a strict
definition for 'decentralised' where all peers are equal and possess
identical functionality - then JXTA is a hybrid system. Personally I would
tend to agree with this. 

 

JXTA would fall into the camp of what is often referred to as the third
generation of P2P systems - with semi-centralised systems being the first
(Napster, etc), fully decentralised being the second (early Gnutella,
Pastry, Chord, etc), and hybrid systems being the third (super/server peer
systems). 

 

The trend within P2P is towards the latter third generation/hybrid systems,
as they can draw on the advantages possessed by the previous two
generations. I wrote a small piece on this topic for a book chapter a couple
of weeks back, unfortunately I don't have it to hand.

No. I don't think the bootstrapping peers make JXTA a hybrid p2p platform.
Any peer can become a rendezvous as far as it has the right credentials to
do it.  Furthermore, as far as I know, bootstrapping is a general problem in
many different p2p settings, but as you said: as soon as a peer can join the
network, the seeding rendezvous are not essencial to the network operation. 

I would classify JXTA as a super-node p2p network where there are a set of
super peers (rendezvous and relays) and edge peers that use the super peers
to route messages and join the network. Kaaza and Skype are other examples
of such kind of networks.
