Have you tried setting your LANG variable to en_US or en_US.UTF-8? Sounds
like it is currently set to C or not set at all.

This looks like an encoding problem, not a generics problem. The blackdown
JDK 
should be functionally identical to Sun's, right ? I mean the classpath, 
compiler and VM have to be compliant.
Since the generics are implemented like an application then this looks a lot

like a problem with the application.

What do you think ?
