Maya Venkatraman published document about redesign of NetBeans
startup experience - NetBeans Out of the Box Specification. The

The JavaDoc tab was removed and replaced by JavaDoc Manager dialog
(accessible from Tools menu). That's good because the tab was not
used frequently. The only shortcoming is that now it is not obvious
how to access JavaDoc index files.

And this is a story how unknown module due to a bug in build system
become famous. Seriously, the schema2beans module which caused
the building problems appears to have useful functionality which
could be used as part of common infrastructure.

Matthew Flower ported several Emacs actions to NetBeans editor and is
willing to continue in this effort. What do you think about it? Is it
still needed now when the externaleditor module exist? Or has Emacs
some actions which it is worth to implement in NetBeans editor?

ClassPath API, something what is really missing in NetBeans. Svata
just posted first version of API and asked for review.

Does NetBeans have any cool features? Sure! But they are often hidden
