i will be using netbeans on windoze machine when i teach (i hope) some 
extension classes this fall. so i need to solve the problem also. there is 
proabably a properties file that specifies where the netbeans system 
directory goes. if this is in an xml file and we can get at the users home 
directory, maybe we will get lucky.

you may not have this problem. on page 12 of the oreilly netbeans book it 
says that on inix systems, the settings are kept in a local settings 
directory created in the user's home directory the first time netbeans is run.

on windoze, it does something with the registry :(
