well, they will hate it if you give them a group project, but they should 
have that awful experience *once* before the real world hits them.

cecs.csulb.edu. does somethjing similar, so all the stuff on d: is lost 
(they can't write to c:). they can copy to their ~name home directories on 
linux though. i am not very familiar with installing netbeans (i am a 
user). but it does need a directory to write project info to, so if you all 
use the same one, you will have a *huge* number of projects. i know a prof 
at school who uses netbeans in his classes. i will ask him. worst case, 
that file could be manually copied and restored by the student if it just 
wrote to the same place. it's not too hard to remake a project (assuming 
the source lives somewhere else that you can mount or it needs to be 
copied). all you really need to do is mount a filesystem and maybe a jar or 
two. i would suggest asking this part of your question on the main list.

i am on windows with my source on linux through samba, so i can mount the 
stuff in ~ray as h:.

maybe you can do some magic with links in a small shell script when each 
student logs in?
