we in AndroMDA.org had the same problem because we're currently
based on MDR (but will also run on EMF, soon). Therefor, I initiated a
solution finding effort some weeks ago which has the following
results:

You may be interested to hear that the MagicDraw developers are
currently writing an XMI 2.1 reader for Netbeans MDR. Internally, in
MDR, everything will still be MOF 1 and JMI 1, for the moment. This is
at least something that will get us going with those UML2 models which
are based on the OMG UML2 metamodel. "The other UML2" models which are
based on the eclipse.org/uml2 metamodel will be covered by AndroMDA
using EMF, instead. So, both paths will be open for us, again.

They have written something and are debugging it now.

Cheers...
Matthias
