Personally, I have enough files (tabs) open that the tabs themselves are
almost useless for file navigation.  Instead, I use one of:
 - ctrl+` to get to recently used files.  This UI could use some work,
but is usually the best option
 - shift+f4 and arrow to the file
 - the editor downarrow
