BTW the startup switch

-J-Dorg.netbeans.spi.java.project.support.ui.packageView.TRUNCATE_PACKAGE_NAMES=true

is invaluable for this reason. Far from perfect, but much more 
convenient than the default behavior in my experience. May be an exposed 
option in a post-4.0 release, or ideally we would patch the tree control 
itself to automatically elide less-significant portions of node names 
when horizontal space is tight, according to the current window width.
