But what drives this trend?

Does my suspicion that higher numbers of laptop users (implying
bright light environments) make sense?
So if you get someone like me who sits in a darkened office (in order to
get good contrast from their screen) they feel assaulted.

For me it's not a question of taste ... it almost literally hurts.
I know of one other engineer who is very sensitive to mostly white screens.
