Because it's not good to allow you to mess with real
IDs. You have not to know about them, and several
underlying store technologies maay not use them at 
all.

Username is core property of user / group. Everything
else is application specific, and does not belong
there.

Yes, OSUser works tughtly with OSProperty ( depends on
it ) , and everything is stored there.  Even email,
and full name ( there are just shortcut methods in
OSuser doing this. 

I personally store a lot of information for the user -

even portlet states on our portal, as well as his
profile.
