+1 for the refactor - but is there a strong case for doing in Pico 1?
Why not concentrate new effort on Pico 2?

Since the two branches are diverging quite rapidly, merging becomes less and less trivial.

So perhaps an approach could be to only do in pico 1 branch the essential changes and put new ideas 
in Pico 2 codebase.
