There are pros and cons of both approaches, so how about multiple implementations based on a simple strategy pattern? The excellent immutable system suggestion could be supported as well.

Imo, a framework should have some degree of flexibility supporting a range of different requirements, scenarios and workloads.

I like the RollbackMarker suggested by Robert. It's simple enough and solves the problem for everybody. In fact it might even be easier to implement than to revert to food taster.
