maxStackTraceDepth isn't the first or only parameter that is configured
system-wide. We generally try to avoid them, for the reasons you
mention, and use Dynamic Parameters instead.

It may actually be possible and not very expensive to make
maxStackTraceDepth a dynamic parameter. Please raise a bug for that.

iirc in my tests the performance dropped by around 30%. ymmv.
