NetServe and JDK1.3

Hiya,

As some may have noticed I have recently been refactoring and rejigging the
NetServe stuff in spice. (NetServe is essentially a bunch of utilities for
writing network servers). I have also been working on sandbox/connector
which is a bunch of utilities for maintaining connections and response in
drop outs etc. Connections can be anything from TCP to SQL to COM port
connections (the toolkit is in use in all the above scenarios).

However I keep running up against scalability problems. ie The system I am
writing on should be able to comfortably scale to many simultaneous
conenction and associating a thread with each client/conenction or even a
thread per server socket is not a scalable solution. Thus I have been
gradually creating NIO versions of many of the services to get scalability.

The problem is that NIO is JDK1.4+ - I was wondering whether it is useful to
maintain the JDK1.3 stuff. I wont use it any longer and dont really want to
maintain it and it may start to get in the way. What does everyone else
think? Anyone using it or should it gradually be rewritten to be JDK1.4.

The advantage of axing it is we essentially get a much better designed
system because we can strongly bind to JDK1.4 features (like channels).
