EJB as socket client

Greetings, EJB specs indicate that EJBs can not manage sockets, e.g. EJB is not allowed to create socket server or use socket factory. But the spec does not state explicitely if EJBs can send data to an external socket server. Can EJBs be socket clients? Any response will be greatly appreciated.
