<P>We've had a long hiatus of the Newsletter - but with the
help and encouragement from several great people in the Jini
Community - we're back to it! Thanks for your interest and
contributions. Believe me.. the discontinuity was purely a time
crunch effect, not a lack of interest in any way. But, we're
going to make the time, and get things flowing again. :-)

<P>Dan Creswell was presented the 2004 Jini Community Contributor's Award on December 8th
at the Eighth Jini Community Meeting. There was much rejoicing! Check out the details on
the <a href="http://www.jini.org/Contrib_Award/index.html">Contributor's Award page</a>.
<P>
There were many nominees for this year's Award, but Dan became the clear choice
after looking at all he's done and reviewing the numerous nomination comments
submitted for him. Here's a sample:

<li>For his <a href="v2getsmart.jini.org">v2getsmart.jini.org</a> project,
which helps many newbies</li>
<li>Because he advocates for Jini open source</li>
<li>His committment towards making Jini and JavaSpaces a defacto platform. He is
always helping, guiding, answering. He has personally helped me offlist,
exchanging many emails.</li>
<li>The <a href="http://dancres.org/blitz/index.html">Blitz project</a> has
impressed me very much and inspired me to work on projects of my own</li>
<li>He motivates people in the Jini Community</li>
<li>He's passionate and dedicated about his work and ideas.</li>
<li>This is a guy who has touched many in the Jini Community. We owe
him our gratitude</li>

his work and congratulate him on being the recipient of the 2004 Jini Community

frustrated by how long it was still taking me to perform simple daily
tasks, such as configuring Jini on new machines, starting up the
required services and also having to write scripts to test and deploy new

about Jini technology on some of the non-Jini projects I was working on

<a name="jdp"><h2>Jini Community Decision Process (JDP) News</a> </h2>
<hr>
Sun Microsystems submitted 22 Proposals ("<a href="http://www.jini.org/standards/Proposals/Porter/proposal.html">The Porter Proposals</a>")
recently to the Jini Community Decision Process. The Proposals cover both licensing and technical
changes to 40 existing specifications plus one new spec. The Proposals are currently
in the "Debate" period of the JDP process.
<P>
Just a heads up, that in the beginning of May we will be seeking nominations
for the Jini Technical Oversight Committee (TOC). There will be one Commercial
and two General House seats up for election to two year terms.

Two new interesting projects on Jini.org to check out:

<li>The <a href="http://codehost.jini.org">Codehost project</a> is working to provide
a mechanism for mobile code without codebases.</li>

<li>The <a href="http://neon.jini.org">Neon project</a> is Jini agent framework and
application grid.</li>
</li>
</ul>
Project releases:
<ul>
<li>The <a href="http://rio.jini.org">Rio project</a> announced general availability
of v3.1.</li>
<P>
<li>The <a href="http://computefarm.jini.org">ComputeFarm project</a> announced
the release of v0.8.1</li>
</ul>
A new project was created, <a href="http://starterkit.jini.org">StarterKit Project</a> to
release Sun's latest version (v2.1Beta) of the Jini Technology Starter Kit. This
release was under the Apache License, Version 2.0. Activity in that project is expected
to evolve over time.
