I'm guessing you are running on Windows? What I do in this situation is install the Microsoft Loopback Adapter. That will then assign a 127.0.0.1 IP address and make your machine keeps its IP stack loaded. None of my "usual" network interfaces (cable or wireless) are connected so they dont have IP addresses. If I try to set an address manually nothing happens (do I have to plug in a cable to get the local network to accept an address?). I dont want to run anything remote or communicate, I just want my eth0 to have an IP address! Or is my thinking simply as flawed as my "understanding" of Windows XP?
