I can't shed any immediate light, sorry.  I don't really remember
much discussion in the past about bulk data transfer performance
(which doesn't mean it didn't occur).  I do recall discussion and
analysis at the other end, for null calls, where one difference
in performance came from JRMP being in bootclasspath and thereby
bypassing security permission checks.
