NB: Should report your emerge info.

The package in Gentoo portage should work fine.  I tested it on both x86 and ppc.

Check your CFLAGS.  There should be something like: -O2 -pipe.  You can add
-fomit-frame-pointer if on x86 and -march=your_cpu if you want.

My package here:

uses the staging branch from the subversion repository and will install
executables as java-sablevm-staging and sablevm-staging.
