how to help things move faster

I've said several times that I don't think that developing widgets
right now is a wise use of one's time.

I'd like that to cease being the case, but that requires progress.
Right now, if you don't feel comfortable coding in the core directly,
the best way you can help things progress is to:

  1. Come up with test cases that stress the layout engine
  2. Try them out
  3. Find bugs
  4. (Super-important:) pare down your test cases to 10-20 lines and
     post a bug
