apt-src doesn't compare to portage, portage is so flexible.  USE vars make
it, really, and also a different init system.

USE vars stipulate what support (if available) you want compiled into an
app... here's my USE vars:

USE="alsa apache2 bonobo evo gtk2 imap innodb ldap maildir mbox -motif
mozilla mysql -oss perl plotutils postgres samba sse tcltk"

You can't do that, AFAIK, with apt-src.

There's other major advantages.  Gentoo is bleeding edge.  An app gets
released and it's in portage within 24 hours (presuming there's a developer
interested enough to add it) although you install it at your own risk.  But
Gentoo current (as in tested and encouraged packages) is so far ahead of
Debian stable it's untrue.

TBH Debian should be as good as Gentoo, but some rather ridiculous political
stances seem to prevent them from making better progress than perhaps the
project should.

Disclaimer: these are not expert opinions... I failed to install Debian (I
couldn't download a bloodey ISO, all the links from debian.org were dud or
difficult and I was new to linux at the time - didn't know about
ibiblio.org)
