Is that in any way more useful than using regular XWT variables in the 
<static> block?

I really don't want to see XWT try and XMLify everything just for the sake 
of XMLifying.  XWT as it is now has a bare minimum of XML and that's just 
perfect, IMO.

XML is stupidly verbose; I don't want to have to have an XML editor just to 
write .xwt files.
