Yeah, it's a stock PHPBB with mysql backend -- searching returns entire threads (some with a dozen pages), and the archives aren't split up by month or even year. Kmail is threaded... Evolution's threaded... I don't know of anyone NOT using a threaded MUA, and if they are using one, then collapsing a thread is as simple as clicking the [-] beside the thread they're not interested in. I dunno, like you put it, it's more personal preference than anything else. I like everything "in one spot" and typically with forums and mailing lists you end up with "oh that's easy it was in the mailing list" or "yeah we did that, details on the forum". But I digress.
