I'd prefer one line if it's ok, just for simplicities sake.

Tiny thing for me to complain about, but I really like one line 
copyright messages. :)

The COPYING file itself can start with a note about AUTHORS, and the 
author attribute to commits in CVS and the ssh keys we use to commit, 
etc.
