This is exactly why I called the terms ambiguous. Selected also is an
adjective "chosen in preference to another" which perfectly
characterizes the set of widgets in the group that we are trying to
identify. It is perfectly reasonable to identify to identify a set by
a descriptive adjective.

Contrary to my earlier assertion of no plurality connotations,
"selection" actually has some pretty strong indications of
singularity. Look at the examples here:

and note that they all describe choosing one item from a set.
