The soldiers in the US army unit shooting have given this
explanation: they were undedr mortar attack, and saw someone watching them from the palestine hotel with binoculars.

They assumed it was a spotter for the mortars,  and shot at it.

Of course, what it was was journalists aiming cameras at them,
but from a mile away, it is a possible mistake.

The shameful part is, of course, for those who immediately jumped into 
assuming there was a sniper in the hotel. AFAIK, no US army sources edver claimed there was a sniper there, much less a machinegun.

But hey, we all know how much some people like truth. They like it so much they rape it every day.
