-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE----- Hash: SHA1 As it would seem has happened time and again on this list, we are in the midsts of quite an good debate on the U.S. I would assert, however, that in large part many of the "flaws" in the U.S. that have been asserted are purely caused by a certain mindset. Let me give an example: If you compare U.S. politics to that of Europe, notice that the U.S. is far more conservative, and then decide that there must be a secretive political force that is "causing" this, you CAN make it appear that there is such a force. Likewise, if you argue that the U.S. isn't really conservative, but that Europe is just very liberal, and that the reason the U.S. is more conservative and has certain tendencies is actually because that's the way the people want it, you can make a very good argument that there is no conspiracy at all. The debate on the media is very similar. Many conservatives I know felt the media was far too harsh on the war effort. Many liberals I know, such as the ones on this list, thought that the media was far too pro-war. A lot of this is all a matter of view point. Is the U.S. becoming totalitarian? I don't think so. The PATRIOT Act, and its possible successor COULD do that, but most likely I think the DSEA, et. al., will never succeed (at least for now). I would add, it should be no surprise that politicians from both sides of the U.S. aisle have somewhat similar views. Recent elections, including the 2000 and 2002 ones, show that the country is virtually split 50-50 on things, meaning moderatism on both sides is the way to win elections. Is that a conspiracy? I doubt it. I might agree with Andreas so far as it goes that there is the potential problem of a New World Order at some point, especially via the UN, but I would assert that the U.S. is hurting the attempts to create such a globalization process, not helping it.
