Here's a chart that coincides well with kde-cafe discussion.  It depicts 
the rise and fall of the value of the dollar over the last 56 years, with 
most of the rising and falling occurring after the dollar left gold.

Just how successful have Volcker and Greenspan been?  Do they deserve 
credit for keeping scraps of paper as valuable as they are?  Should we 
trust that their successors will be as successful?

It's amazing how many answers and explanations once can find for these 
questions.
