I had this problem a while ago with OpenOffice in Debian. I never did 
get to the bottom of it, but blamed it on the fact that a: I run Debian 
Sid, and b: I was using "beta" packages of OO at the time.

It would be nice if fonts in X weren't the utter nightmare that they are 
today.
