this is why we have the "drafts" folder in our mail apps. it's a safe place to 
put things we want to send but probably shouldn't; i use it more often than i

odd... what parts had reverted to defaults? since i've never seen this happen 
on any of the MDK machines i've installed, i can only assume that something 
out of the ordinary did happen. whether it was the OS or something you had 
done, who knows, but this is deffinitely not an ordinary thing for Mandrake. 
sounds like you have extremely bad luck (also remembering your SuSe rants 
here ;). 

IME bad luck usually comes from doing unrecommended things like 
force-installing packages from third parties over top of binaries that come 
with the system, or installing incompatible versions outside of the package 
system (e.g. from source). installing from source is not a problem, but then 
YOU become the package manager which can be easy to mess up (which is why we 
have package management in the first place).

the only real problem i've had with urpm* comes from using it on slower 
machines with less RAM (e.g. my P75 32MB home firewall/fileserver) where it 
is dreadfully slow and occasionally ends up in dead locks. sometimes the dead 
locks get so bad that root can no longer succesfully run any rpm command due 
to stale locks. i'm not sure what the source of these seeming race conditions 
are, but i only see them on overly slooow machines so it isn't a big deal for 
me.
