  Of course, the article makes the situation sound a lot more negative than it 
actually may be. Sure the U.S. is going to try to stop anyone else from using 
space weapons, just like we try to stop people from using Nukes. The point 
is, and I think the DoD sees this, is that having the technology is itself a 
deterent for others considering doing the same.

  Example: say a rogue nation (say N. Korea) wants to gain an advantage. If 
the U.S. has ignored the potential space weapons possiblities, they could 
surprise us and gain a strategic advantage. By us developing them, and 
assumedly not using them, since we wouldn't have anyone to use them against 
anyway, we encourage other nations not create space weapons programs.

  U.S. weapontry should always be the best and most powerful possible -- not 
that we should use all of the weapons, but putting our heads in the sand and 
making less powerful weapons to be "nice" is dangerous. Creating space 
weapons might not mean we would use them, but we would have them if they were 
needed.
