It's not a new URL really, it's the same URL with a GET parameter
attached.

Precisely.  There is no significance or use for the casual user or
surfer.  However, someone on the server end could do interesting stuff
with it software wise (ie precisely track where the hits or URL
originated from).

It would be understandable for someone at the server end to attach
"?slashdot" to the URL, but not for a casual user to make the
addition.
