  Actually, ATI's drivers do utilize the 3D capabilities of the card,
but they are not Free Software/Open Source, they are binaries. XFree86
has drivers based on the specs ATI has provided, but they are 3rd party
developed and do not support accelerated 3D

  ATI may eventually go with a Free Software driver, but only when the
Radeon R3xx series is no longer competitive.
