It's of course not a rumor, but again you're focusing on what accomodates you 
and dismissing (or plain ignoring) the rest. For instance, that the Nazi 
party would never have gained power if Germany wasn't in such a huge 
financial crisis and hadn't been beaten into submission by the Versailles 
treaty (one of Hitler's main argument was that he would abrogate it). So the 
victors of WW-I had a direct responsibility in WW-II.

Likewise, the reason why the US decided to get involved in the european side 
of WW-II wasn't to liberate europe from the Nazis (the US government had few 
qualms with them), but to prevent Europe from ending up being part of Soviet 
Union, something which they had a problem with. Not that we aren't grateful 
they did it, but it's important to understand it wasn't out of pure altruism. 
And Lafayette helped Washington mostly to piss England off, too :-).

Anyway, if all this hadn't been acknowledged and understood, the European 
Union could never have been made. And that's why "battle of good vs. evil" 
always triggers alarms over here.
