There were many other reasons of course. As for their respective "directness" 
we can argue about that for ages. :-)

If I recall my history classes correctly, in June 44 the Red Army had already 
reached the German borders, and Communism was a very significant political 
force all throughout Europe. De Gaulle had to argue with the Ally Command so 
they would stop over Paris, as they were hell bent on rushing to meet the 
Russians as fast as they could, so they wouldn't take over too much 
territory. I don't recall the US helping the Soviets at Yalta...

I may be because I live in it, but I'm pretty happy with it :-). It's not 
without flaws but still much better than completely independant countries.
