> Still, wouldn't it make more sense to spend this money on education or social > issues ? The problem, I think, is that there will always be an education or social issue. If you spend the money on that now and plan to do this later, when later comes, there will be another leaky roof to fix (dep -- did you use that statement in one of your pieces, if so I didn't mean to copy it... it sounds familar.) At any rate, the question is, when do you move on and explore? Should the Corp. of Discovery (Lewis and Clark) have been kept from taking their troops across North America because the money could be better used by the fledgling United States? Should the Apollo project have been skipped for the same reasons? It's been a long time since we really moved forward in the sense of exploration. The benefits, both the technological gains dep highlights, not to mention the unmeasurable point that it unites our common awe in seeing humanity reach out into the frontier, are far more valuable than the amount it will cost. If it were up to me, I'd try to find a way to give NASA more support for this project (tied to goals, just like the president did). Just my $0.02... -Tim -- --------------------------------------------------------------- Timothy R.
