Well one could say that they are the same place that the 70 MPG car that the Democrats

Or, a realistic answer is that they are in 2010.  Which in a way is being in agreement 
with you.

Why don't they/didn't they (I am being critical of both boondoggles) simply try to push 
existing technology to design an very economical car that actually could be produced and 
sold next year.  Just take the technologies that are available on various Audi, VW and BMW 
models and combine them into a reasonable Camry and Focus sized vehicles.  Much better 
than "pie in the sky".
