good question, for which there are a couple of answers, one of which is 
the one i had in mind. the other one first.

i caught 37 different flavors of hell when a site i own ran an editorial 
which said that there seemed to be a strong antisemitic sentiment in 
kde. at that time, the official voice of kde in this country was 
someone who, in the post that started this thread and in many others, 
has proved that anything official coming from kde in the u.s. was 
indeed passed through a raging antisemite. that his endeavors in 
promotion of kde met terrible failure and that the success of kde here 
was because of its own qualities and in spite of him speaks well of 
those qualities.

but what i had in mind was that it is just a kind of sad observation 
that two immigrants to the u.s. happened to be, respectively, the 
public faces of gnome and kde. they were, of course, miguel and 
andreas. the sad thing being the difference in the choices they made, 
and how those different choices have played out. in that respect, it 
was a comparison of two people rather than two desktops.

there is a third point, which is worth considering. do a whois lookup of 
kde.com and one finds andreas's company. now, with substantially less 
stretch than has been employed on this list in characterizing 
organizations, companies, and careers due to association or to past 
statements, many people would very likely conclude that the company 
which owns kde.com is antisemitic to the point of . . . well, to just 
about any point one could imagine. and as least insofar as the .com 
domain name is concerned, that company *owns* the kde name.

now. that may be something that is of no concern to the people involved 
with kde. i am certain it is something in which kde's competitors would 
take delight. i am further certain that, were some of his posts to this 
list publicized, it would be sufficient to get distributions all over 
the place to flat-out drop kde. they would almost have to. guilt by 
association? yes, but something scarcely new to this list. a failure to 
separate what someone says in an unofficial capacity from what he says 
officially? that's nothing new here, either. sauce for the goose and 
all.

but all i had in mind was the comparison between what miguel made of the 
opportunities he found, and what andreas made of the rather greater 
opportunities that were available to him, and to observe that it's sad.
