Using dmg files

Hi all,
As a recent convert from Linux, I'm excited by the possibility of 
running some of my favorite KDE apps on my mac. If I use the dmg files 
that Ranger Rick, etc have made available, do I need to do the patches? 
How do you set the QTDIR to /usr/local/qt? Of the directions, I think 
that's the only one I don't follow. Will these dmg files put things in 
/opt/kde?
