Cmd-Shift-4 allows you to use the crosshairs to select a portion of the screen to grab. Cmd-Option-Ctrl-Shift-4 is the same, but places the capture on the clipboard instead. Cmd-Option-Ctrl-Shift-3 is a full screen to the clipboard. In OS 9, there was a way to shoot only a window, but it seems to not have made the cut for OS X. Shame on them.
