with the new FD.o menu standard, it is quite possible to do this by defining 
multiple XML files of various detail and providing a way to switch between 
them. probably still not the easiest thing in the world to manage, though.

TOM will be complete in 3.3 and is designed to be used as a launcher menu 
rather than a "list all apps" menu
