If quick security fixes are important, the only way to go is with Woody (the 
latest stable release) [0]. However, there are a lot of backports of newer 
software (like OO.o and KDE 3.2) but you may end up in something similar of 
RPM hell. I personally run unstable on my machine and install testing on all 
my friends'. :)

Manual pages, /usr/share/doc and Google.
And when that doesn't help, IRC or some appropriate mailing list.
