While I agree, that there are operating systems and GUI systems that use 
way less resources than full blown desktop environments like KDE and 
GNOME¹, if you are so good at optimizing stuff by changing a few lines of 
code, why don't you offer to contribute to the KDE project?

If you can optimize software like this, then please by all means 
contribute! I would love to see results like this.



[1]  I would not have thought of Windows Server 2000 but about something 
like AmigaOS or regarding Unix like operating systems something like QNX, 
at least earlier versions, not sure about today. But that does not really 
matter here. But also these are not always directly comparable. AmigaOS 
lacks memory protection for example and the GUI I have seen back then on 
QNX lacked in features compared to a full-blown Plasma desktop. Still once 
it was even able to start a web browser to surf the internet from a 1,44 
MiB floppy disk. However that web browser would not nearly be able to 
display quite some of the modern so called web pages. Not even close.

To conclude: Maybe the challenge lies deeper than in changing a few lines 
of code. Still it can be a good goal or project within KDE to 
constructively work on optimizing stuff beyond what KDE developers 
currently already do. But someone needs to do it and actively drive it 
forward.
