Ha!

I did "grep -r kate .kdehead/ |grep conf" and found 
".kdehead/share/config/katepluginrc" as well as 
".kdehead/share/config/katesyntaxhighlightingrc". I
mercilessly deleted them both and voila!, kate does
start again....

Thanks to Michael Goffioul for email-fertilizing my 
imagination!

kate-maintainer may want to investigate further, or just close the report
completely... Cheers!  (BTW, kate looks great; after a nearly 2-month 
abstinent period I can safely say that. I was even in danger of behaving
unfaithful and learning emacs! Thanks to all kate hackers for a great GUI 
editor!)
