Sorry, I must be blind: I can find the requested feature in KEdit now (where 
it's called "Soft Wrapping"). But I still can not find it in Kate. I'm still 
getting hard line breaks after saving a file and see no possibility to avoid 
them.

(Just in case it could be related: my kdelibs compilation is several weeks old 
already and I compiled only the kate directory.)
