Making Lists seems not to work for me

I am so glad I found Knowit.  It really does all I need it to do and is 
the only program I could find besides Korganizer that does hyperlinks.

I tried making a list and when I click on the requested list, I get the 
bullet or number, etc.  My expectation is that I will be able to make 
the second item in the list. So far I have not been able to do this.  I 
have tried Edit/Lists/<select one>; type Item one, go to next line.  I 
tried making a list and then highlighting it and doing 
Edit/Lists/<select one>.   I tried highlighting the individual things in 
my list and also highlighting the whole list.  I'm either missing 
something or my system is not allowing lists.

Using Knowit 0.10 and KDE 3.2.3 on Slackware 10.
